Work this week has been Too Much and I am So Tired. I have a meeting tomorrow I have to get through, and then I have to go pick up my new glasses, and then I am Done. Until it all starts again on Tuesday, sigh.

RIP Gloria Steinem. Sigh.

I survived pickleball with the bosses! (Well, not my boss, since she is still recovering, but the rest of the c-suite.) It would not have been my chosen "fun" activity, but once we got there, I had a good time. My knees, otoh, are very unhappy with me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Today's cooking was okay - the chocolate chip banana bread scones didn't taste banana-y enough to me, but I ate one while it was still warm, so maybe being totally cool will enhance the banana taste? Also, I made them too big and only got 9 instead of 12 as the recipe suggests. *hands* I have extra mashed bananas in the freezer now, so there could be a next time to get it right.

Also, you probably know this, but just in case you don't, if you want banana bread or something else really banana-y but only have less ripe bananas on hand, you can roast them, and it will intensify the flavor and work like the soft overripe ones you'd normally use.

And today's stir fry was easy but kind of bland? Maybe it's on me because I didn't bother to add the suggested pinch of salt at the end, because soy sauce is usually salty enough for me? But I thought the garlic and ginger combo would have more flavor punch and it all kind of amalgamated into something that was okay instead of great. But I still have pork and cabbage left uncooked to try again another night this week! So again, there's the opportunity for tinkering and improvement.

My stomach has been doing a very unpleasant thing and I need it to stop by Monday since I have to go play pickleball(!!) in Red Hook(!!!) for work.

Despite that, today, I baked a small loaf of ciabatta and made another attempt at the tomato tian, this time only cooking it for 50 minutes instead of 90 (pics). Still topped it with burrata though, and it was delicious.

My plan tomorrow is to make scones for breakfast (and the week ahead) and then some kind of pork and cabbage stir fry for dinner. We'll see how it goes.

Wednesday reading on a Thursday:

what I've just finished:
A Trade of Blood by Robert Jackson Bennett, the third Ana and Din mystery, and I think maybe the best one yet? spoilers ) (also, nb: I am using an Elementary icon, but this series is a Nero Wolfe analogue, not a Holmes one! I am just saying!)

The Bullet That Missed by Richard Osman, the third Thursday Murder Club mystery, which I enjoyed. Again, the mystery wasn't all that mysterious, but I do enjoy spending time with the characters.

Daggerbound by T. Kingfisher, the sequel to Swordheart. I enjoyed it. It's always fun to revisit the world of the White Rat, and this romance was slightly different from her usual.

what I'm reading now/next:
I don't know! I have so much fic open in tabs, so maybe that for a bit? But also so many books and do I want to stop while I've got momentum? idk idk!

In work news, I received a supposedly final presentation today from a program team and when I opened it, it was 1. not in the approved organization template and 2. ALL IN COMIC SANS WTF. But it came to me with alleged approval from the higher ups, so I need to ask my boss if I can at least fix the font before I send it out. (I'm still missing the slides from a different team, so it's not delayed by this or anything.) I just...how does this happen in the year of our lord 2026???

3 things make a post:

= RIP Tim Curry. Sigh, it's like 2016 all over again!

= Saw the eye doctor today. I mentioned that for the last week or so, I have been having a weird afterimage in my left eye that sometimes shows up as a blank spot when my eyes are open, but the doctor said she couldn't see anything wrong when she dilated my eyes. I have to go back in a month for another dilation. I am getting new glasses in the meantime, and also she said she sees the very early beginnings of cataracts. My dad had them, and eventually had surgery for them, but I am not noticing anything different (other than the weird afterimage) in my vision at this time, so we'll be - no pun intended - keeping an eye on it.

= After the eye doctor, I renewed my NYPL library card, so that was good.

= I watched this week's Ted Lasso and wtf? Who are the writers and can we fire them??? spoilers )

Last night, I dreamt I got my period for the first time in 6 years, and ugh, that was not pleasant (I'm sure you all know this, but if you have gone through menopause and then suddenly start having bleeding again, see your doctor ASAP), but thankfully it was only a dream.

Unfortunately, when I logged into work, I got roped into a mandatory "retreat" with the c-suite next Monday, at which we will be playing pickleball. I don't even know, y'all. My boss asked me on Friday if I wanted to go and I was like, lol no. I am the least athletic person you know. But this morning I got a message from the CEO's assistant that she (the CEO) expects me to attend. So guess what I'll be doing next Monday? Sigh. I'm sure it will be fine. I just don't understand why I am being included.

Anyway, episode 2 of Lanterns: spoilers )

And lastly, you've seen the s3 trailer for The Pitt, right? The only reason to look forward to January!

today's recipe try-out was canederli di pane, which are balls made out of breadcrumbs and poached in broth. They were decent, which is good, because I will be having them for 3 more meals. *wry* As I was eating them, my first thought was, this would be good fried, and then my second thought was, that would be kind of a bastardized hush puppy, so yeah, that is kind of what they are like, except not fried (and not made of cornmeal).

I had 3/4 of a loaf of Italian bread left over from Friday, so I sliced it and toasted it in the oven and then bashed it with a potato masher to make breadcrumbs, which is not an effort I would usually make, but since I already had the bread... *hands* It didn't make enough breadcrumbs so I had to still add store-bought ones anyway, so next time I would just go with store-bought from the start. Also, I used bacon instead of speck, since I always have bacon. I think those are the only changes I made? But I thought they were fine - a good pantry meal, tbh.

And yesterday, I finally used that freezer cup (finally, I say, like I've had it for more than a week or two) to make a cream soda slushy and it was so good! I will definitely be doing that again. *g*

This weekend my entertainment so far has been trying new recipes. Yesterday, I made a tomato tian from Milk Street (paywalled, so the recipe is below the cut), and it was delicious - I ate it with crusty bread and topped with burrata - but I know my oven runs hot and I says to myself, says I, "90 minutes at 425°F seems too long," but then I said, "but I'm sure Milk Street knows what they're about," and so I let it go for 90 minutes and lo and behold, it was too long. My beautiful plum tomatoes were charred in several places. Still delicious! But I had to soak the dish I baked it in over night before putting it in the dishwasher to get all the charred bits off. So definitely would make it again, but roast for maybe only an hour.

Then this morning, I made the NY Times' famous plum torte (gift link), and I was like, this seems like an awfully small amount of batter for a 9" pan, and also to be baked for a whole hour, so I checked it at 30 minutes, and it was not quite done so I let it go another 8 minutes, which was probably about 5 minutes too long? But it tastes good, even if I only used 7 regular plums to top it. Comments suggest the original recipe was using prune plums, which are smaller, and therefore they were able to fit 24 halves on top, but I just had regular black plums. Still turned out to be quite tasty. I like the suggested variations replacing part of the flour with semolina or cornmeal, and for using brown butter or olive oil in place of the butter, so I may try one or more of those variations as well. As it is, I did grate the zest of one lemon into the sugar, and added a tsp of vanilla as well. The thing caused a smoke condition in my kitchen for some reason though - I wonder if it was the cinnamon sprinkled on top? Idk, but I had to turn on the mostly useless fan over the oven.

And then for dinner (and leftovers), I made another NY Times recipe, since I still had 3 ears of corn left from last week's giant corn fritter: slow cooker chicken and creamed corn (also a gift link), though I left out the bell pepper because I don't like them. It's good! I know I shouldn't have been surprised, but I was surprised at how much liquid the corn cobs created in the bottom of the pot. And I love the smell of lime - it is such a good summer smell to me.

Anyway, tomorrow I have another recipe I want to test out, so I will report back how that goes as well.

Fandom 50 S4 Post 30: ILLIT attack!

A super adorbs variety show in which Illit's surprised a girls' school. I loved seeing the different fandoms doing presentations, ILLIT's reactions to everything happening onstage, and the happy reveal of them performing.

Please note that there's a LOT and I do mean a LOT of v. happy screaming. I think that the show's PDs tried to balance the noise out a little. BUT I do have to make it clear that, once ILLIT shows up on stage, the audience is HELLA THRILLED from beginning to end. It didn't bother me, but I get why it'd be annoying for others.

English subtitles are available.

A few months ago, Jungkook went to Japan as part of his brand deal with Calvin Klein. Vogue Japan took the opportunity to film Jungkook trying out and rating various Japanese snacks.

Which is an ideal type of content for him since he LURVES snacks in general. Off the top of my head, abt the only kind of flavor he is less enthusiastic abt is tart and/or lemon-y one. This has English subtitles.
